Johannesburg, 10 February 2026 – Boogertman + Partners, the architects behind 1 Discovery Place in Sandton, welcomes Discovery Group’s decision to acquire Phase 1 of its headquarters from Growthpoint Properties and Zenprop. Announced last week, the transaction affirms the firm’s long-held belief that quality architecture delivers lasting economic, social and brand value.

“Discovery’s decision to purchase Phase 1 of 1 Discovery Place reinforces our core conviction that architecture, when designed with purpose and care, is a long-term asset – not merely a space to occupy,” said Bob van Bebber, senior director at Boogertman + Partners and design lead for 1 Discovery Place.

In a statement released by Discovery, the Group noted: “The transaction, at R4.05 billion, will result in an immediate and growing net annual cash flow saving, with a net present value benefit of approximately R800 million over the remaining lease period, in addition to securing long-term ownership of a landmark asset.”

Completed in 2018, 1 Discovery Place redefined the possibilities of large-scale commercial architecture on the African continent. Located at the highest point in Sandton, it remains one of the largest single-tenanted commercial office developments in Africa and was the first development of its scale to achieve a 5-Star Green Star Design rating. This was later upgraded to a 6-Star Green Star As-Built rating by the Green Building Council South Africa, denoting world leadership in green building standards.

“This project demonstrated that corporate architecture can be iconic, human-centered, environmentally responsible and contextually sensitive, while also making a meaningful contribution to the city through its accessible ground floor,” added van Bebber.

Designed from the inside out, the building prioritises human experience at every scale. The interior environment was conceived to actively support Discovery’s holistic approach to health, workplace collaboration and productivity. At an urban level, the building functions as a precinct connector, supporting Discovery’s place-making ambitions and enabling a vibrant interface between the organisation and its surrounding community. Anchoring the Sandton Summit precinct, 1 Discovery Place has become a catalyst in its urban context and makes a generous contribution to the public realm.

Adrian Gore, chief executive of Discovery, said: “1 Discovery Place has served us exceptionally well. It is where our culture comes to life and where people from around the world experience Discovery first-hand.”

The Discovery media statement added: “1 Discovery Place has become central to the organisation’s culture, client engagement and global partnerships. It is both a workplace and a symbol of Discovery’s presence in its home market, in which the Group has thrived.”

Discovery’s decision to convert its long-term tenancy into ownership represents a powerful endorsement of the building’s design quality and long-term value.

“1 Discovery Place is a building that pays dividends in both human and financial terms,” said van Bebber.
