The St. Albans College, a private school in Pretoria, planned the expansion of their dining hall, Hamilton Hall. The current facility caters for approximately 350 people at one sitting when used as a presentation hall. However, the school required a facility that could accommodate a minimum of 700 seated guests for their annual "Open Day" function.
The design intention was to create a covered open area extension to the existing hall, which includes providing a level, hard-surfaced landscape to cater for large functions. This space also serves as an outdoor area for exhibitions and other recreational uses.
The new proposal is sensitive to the existing facilities and integrates with the historic landscape that forms the heart of the school. The existing courtyard and central pedestrian spine are at the center of the entire campus, maintaining the cohesive flow of the school grounds.
