The refurbishment of the existing Colony shopping centre has transformed the centre into a vibrant neighbourhood hub. The design focused on developing two key zones: the urban courtyard on the Jan Smuts Avenue side and the convenient retail front facing the main on-grade parking area.
A new timber lattice screen wraps around the development, serving as a unifying element to visually connect previously disconnected areas of the centre. This screen creates a refreshed façade and becomes a prominent feature visible from the street, designed to attract visitors and establish the centre as a notable landmark in the area. The timber lattice is constructed of Accoya timber in its natural state and Nutec planks painted black. Nutec was positioned according to fire statutory requirements, generating a pixelated façade.
The urban square, visible from Jan Smuts Avenue, has been framed by the new screen, becoming the heart of the centre. This public square provides an inviting area for restaurants to open onto, offering a place for people to gather, as well as host events and functions.
By using tiles and paving in coordinated colours, along with carefully positioned planters and shading elements, the design creates a welcoming urban square where people naturally want to meet and enjoy both day and evening activities.
The south-western side of the centre opens directly to the existing on-grade parking, providing easy access to the convenience retail stores. The lattice screen serves to define this edge, hold signage, highlight shop entrances, and unify what was once a fragmented shopping centre. Existing trees are preserved, and additional pockets of vegetation are introduced to soften the transition between the parking area and the building.
