As we mark World Architecture Day 2024 with the theme ‘Empowering the Next Generation to Participate in Urban Design,’ Boogertman + Partners reflects on the key role young architects play in shaping future cities.

Boogertman + Partners has recognized the importance of cultivating young talent to meet future challenges. Empowering the next generation is not only about teaching the fundamentals of architecture but also about passing on a vision for urban environments that complement nature, address social needs, and promote economic growth. Through hands-on experience in projects that combine design and sustainability, we prepare a new generation of architects to lead.

Bankenveld District City: A Prototype for Future Urban Living

The Bankenveld District City (BDC) is set to become a model for mixed-use developments in South Africa. Located between the Woodmead and Marlboro offramps, near Sandton, with visibility from the N3 highway, this connected precinct fills a gap in Johannesburg’s urban landscape, improving Bankenveld  City (BDC)  reflects the themes of World Architecture Day 2024, its flexible design accommodates residential, commercial, retail, light industry, and educational needs, making it a hub for diverse activities. With high-density housing, street-level retail, and light commercial areas, BDC boosts economic activity, promotes social inclusion, and supports a vibrant city culture around the clock.

Promoting Urban Mobility and Inclusive Cities

A critical aspect of both World Architecture Day 2024 and the Bankenveld District City vision is urban mobility. At BDC, transport accessibility is a priority, with strategic placement along major transport routes and an emphasis on creating walkable, accessible urban spaces. The integration of public transport, high-street retail, and connected green spaces promotes both environmental sustainability and social inclusivity.

The development’s design fosters a sense of connection, linking residents to commercial and recreational areas, while also encouraging pedestrian movement. The variety of land use, from high-density residential zones to light industry and educational facilities, ensures that BDC remains an inclusive space that caters to a broad demographic, promoting both socio-economic diversity and opportunity.

Boogertman  + Partners is proud to join the global effort to empower young architects and reshape urban spaces.
