Arena-in-a-Box presents as a response to the increasing demand for new multi-purpose facilities that are fit to house some of Africa’s fastest growing sport events, as well as concerts. The project aims to provide a robust, modular, relocatable, and flexible arena – suitable for application in a variety of contexts.
This containerised solution is a time-efficient alternative to traditional buildings, expanding access to multi-purpose event spaces. Designed to host elite-level basketball (FIBA Level 1), it features 4 grandstands with a baseline capacity of 4,000 seats. Portable court flooring allows the arena to adapt for handball, volleyball, concerts, banquets, and more, providing a versatile and efficient solution for medium-sized venues.
The concept of adaptability and movability is showcased best in the material manifestation of these spaces. All spaces are either containerised (within a container), or exist in the spaces between containers. These containers serve as the building structure, as well as the means through which the arena can be stored and transported to various sites. For this reason, it is best to consider the scheme as two separate components: the building, which comprises a standard kit of parts, and the site - which is defined by scenario-specific characteristics. A notional site has been considered as a baseline scenario capable of supporting the functions of the arena. Apart from a permanent concrete surface bed which forms the foundation of the structure, the arena is fully demountable and self-contained.
